We hate to break it to you… but we have some bad news.

From the 1st September, most broadband providers in Aotearoa are raising their prices.

This is yet another price increase that many Kiwis are facing across their financial bills. With power bills going up, interest rates rising, groceries becoming more expensive, and inflation skyrocketing, this year has been challenging for most households across the motu.

The news that broadband prices are going up will only make things harder for everyone.

We know this will be stressful for a lot of you! Don’t worry though, we’re here to help. Read on to find out exactly what you need to do to get through these price increases!

Why are broadband prices going up?

Prices are set to increase as a result of what’s happening behind the scenes in the broadband industry.

If you weren’t already aware, Local Fibre Companies are responsible for all Fibre connections across Aotearoa. They build, fix, and maintain the network. You may have heard of some of these companies- Chorus, Enable, Tuatahi, Northpower, and Unison. Currently, the Local Fibre Companies are facing rising costs across all their services. Thus, they’re increasing their charges to providers. Many providers are now having to pass these charges on to customers, in order to continue to operate their businesses. Therefore, the price of your broadband plan could increase.

How much more will I have to pay?

If you’re on a Fibre, VDSL or ADSL (Copper connection) plan, then get ready to pay a few dollars more each month.

While we aren’t certain what the price rise will be for every provider, we have seen announcements from Vodafone and 2degrees on how much more they will be charging customers. Vodafone will be charging $6 more a month on their Unlimited Broadband Fibre, VDSL and ADSL plans. 2degrees will be charging $3 more a month on all their Fibre and Copper (VDSL or ADSL) plans.

This price increase may not seem like much but over time the costs will add up!

What should I do?

Luckily, there are a few options to lessen the pain of dealing with a bigger broadband bill.

1. Stay on your current plan and find other ways to save.

If you really enjoy the plan that you’re on and don’t want to try and find a cheaper deal, then you can always stay on it. Instead, you can look for other ways to save. Whether it’s changing your power plan, cutting down on the grocery bills or spending less time in the car, there are plenty of ways to save. To get you thinking, check out our excellent money-saving tips, right here!

2. Change to a cheaper plan with your provider.

A lot of providers are offering the choice for customers to jump onto a different cheaper plan. This may be a good option if you’re happy with what the alternative plans offer. Who knows, you might not even need all the bells and whistles of your current plan. For some customers, changing to a cheaper Wireless plan may actually work out better! So it’s definitely an avenue worth exploring.

3. Cancel your plan.

If you aren’t happy with these price increases, you can always cancel your plan with your provider. Due to the current situation, many providers are waiving their early termination fees. So if you really want out of your plan, now’s a great time to leave!

4. Above all though, the best thing we think you should do is…. compare and switch!!

Since prices are increasing across all providers, we think now is the perfect time for you to compare and switch. Not sure what we mean? Then read on!
